Following an extensive nationwide search, Eanes ISD Superintendent Dr. Nola
Wellman will recommend Dr. John Carter as Principal of Westlake High School
at the Wednesday, June 20 board meeting. Dr. Carter spent 13 years at the
nationally-acclaimed Adlai Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Ill.,
where he most recently served as principal for two years. Dr. Carter has 25
total years in education, including 11 in administration.
“We are fortunate to have such strong leadership at Westlake High School
with staff who have implemented a solid vision focused on improving learning
opportunities and providing engaging experiences,” said Dr. Wellman. “I am
confident that Dr. Carter’s commitment to teachers, their professional
growth and student success will carry that vision forward and propel
Westlake to even higher standards than before.”
During his time at Adlai Stevenson, Dr. Carter worked as a Math teacher and
team leader, Director of Mathematics and Assistant Principal for Teaching
and Learning before taking the helm in 2010. He also has experience at the
collegiate level, having served as Adjunct Professor of Education at Lake
Forest College in Illinois.
Dr. Carter earned his Ph.D in Mathematics Education from Illinois State
University. He has two Master’s Degrees from the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign in Educational Administration and Secondary Education. He
received his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with Highest Departmental
Distinction, graduating Summa Cum Laude, from the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign.
Dr. Carter has garnered an impressive list of awards including the National
Presidential Award for Mathematics in Teaching and the Award for Innovation
in Mathematics and Science Teaching from “Business Week” Magazine. He has
been published in various areas such as Advanced Mathematical Concepts and
Professional Learning Communities.
Linda Rawlings announced her retirement in May after serving as principal at
Westlake for six years. The search process began immediately and included
members from the Westlake Campus Leadership Team, teachers, parents,
administrators and a student.
Dr. Carter and his family will spend the next few weeks searching for a home
before an August start date.
