Austin is a town for runners. From Gilbert’s Gazelles to RunTex, there are resources of every kind for runners, joggers and walkers. Then there are the miles upon miles of trails that crisscross Austin communities in every direction.
Gilbert’s Gazelles is a very popular training program for runners of all abilities from every walk of life. Started by Gilbert Tuhabonye, an elite runner who grew up in Burundi and survived horrific clashes between the Tutsi and Hutu tribes, the program aims to help runners reach their goals. Whether you want to run your first 5k or qualify for the Boston Marathon, Gilbert’s Gazelles offers support and proven training methods.
The Town Lake trails are not only a place to get in a good run or take a scenic walk, they are often a social scene and support group system for many Austinites. Generations of runners have been meeting for daily runs along these trails, which are used by 1.5 million people a year. Winding through some of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the city, trails like the Rollingwood trail give runners not only a healthy way to unwind, but also a great way to connect with your neighborhood.
Good for the soul and good for the body, exercise can lower blood pressure, improve heart health and boost your mood. If there is a fountain of youth it would most likely be found on the running trails in Austin.
